Velocity distribution of stars in a galaxy Left : expected assuming only visible matter using GR/Newtons law Right: observed Something makes stars far from the centre move much faster then expected 🤔

There was a particle of dark matter That sought to prove it could scatter. Into a liquid it flew But went right through; If only the detector had been fatter. My popular article on efforts to detect dark matter underground. 👇

Mean and median cannot differ by more than 1 standard deviation :) In fact one has the more general result: |μ−m_p| ≤ σ * max(sqrt[p/1-p],sqrt[1-p/p]), where p refers to the p-th percentile. Setting p=1/2 gives the result for median and mean. Source: gwern.net/doc/statistics…

The message that “Particle physicists are lying scammers” has been heard by the usual clueless people. This accusatory bullshit is lazy and pathetic. It’s “climate scientists follow the money” crankery repackaged for contrarian audiences. Sadly, it’s in no way unexpected.

Over more than 6 decades, Gerard 't Hooft's discoveries have been critical in the development of modern quantum field theory and the Standard Model of particle physics – not to mention his other contributions, from black holes to holography. This year, a Special Breakthrough
