In the Thuringian Forest Dryopteris filix-mas is called the 'stray herb, and said to cause travellers to lose their way. If a man inadvertently steps over it he must swap his shoes to the wrong feet to break its spell, and a woman must turn her apron inside out!

In the Victorian ‘Language of Flowers’ crab-apple blossom symbolises ‘irritability’, due to its sour-tasting fruit and the association of its name with ‘crabby’, meaning ‘irritable’. These pretty certainly make me feel more good-humoured than crabby though!

It is said when the moon goddess Silene fell in love with Endymion, she lulled him into an eternal sleep to keep him young. Inspired by this story, the bluebell was once called Endymion non-scriptus, as its scent was believed to induce dreamless sleep.

A legend says that when the belief in magical creatures began to wane, a unicorn fell asleep, never to awaken. Gradually it changed into a ‘Unicorn Plant’; its hooves became leaves, its coat-hairs covered the stem & its horn became seed pods.
