The silent giant of Stonehenge... the Heel Stone. This 36-tonne boulder stands alone, but a nearby hole suggests it once had a twin. Moved? Lost? Did two giants once guard the ancient entrance?

Despite appearances, we didn’t have clear skies last night at Stonehenge. The Strawberry Moon (another view! This is the solstitial axis) was obscured by a very faint layer of cloud. #archaeology

Happy summer solstice from Stonehenge!🌞 This year we welcomed around 25,000 people to the stunning Stonehenge and live-streamed the celebrations, with over 400,000 views from across the world. The sunrise was greeted with traditional drumming and chanting, cheering and dancing.

When we think of Stonehenge, the stone circle usually comes to mind. But that iconic feature was actually a later addition! The earliest known construction at the site dates back to around 3000 BC and consisted of a circular ditch with inner and outer banks - the 'Bank & Ditch'.
