Sad to report damage to Ballymacdermott Court Tomb in County Armagh, a State Care Monument. The cause of the damage is unclear. @Neolithic_Eire #handsoffourheritage #saveknockiveagh apps.communities-ni.gov.uk/NISMR-PUBLIC/D… Communities NI.

Terrible. Hopefully weather related. Been fairly calm past few nights across North so wouldn't like to think it was malicious, though given damage at other sites, lack of adequate state protection & dearth of education around our heritage, this sight is disturbing. @unawalsh54

The Cavan Burren is a UNESCO Global Geopark. As well as the limestone underfoot, there are hundreds of glacial erratics left after the ice age. Sandstone boulders which display various modifications - slab removal, creation of overhangs and pits, repositioning and propping. 2/

Many of the boulders have atlantic rock art (cup & rings) but Gaby has identified a new form of rock sculpting. Boulder monuments with directional ridges, many aligned on the nearby wedge tombs. Closely associated with prehistoric settlement features. 3/

PB48 is a split boulder with two sections still in place. One section has extensive working on one side but not on the other. It has a prominent - and very phallic elongated ridge. PB48 has had several slabs removed to provide the necessary work surfaces. (3D model) 4/

What is so interesting about this monument is that another one, PB46, has been created with almost identical features. Boulder PB46 has had a prop added and the elongated ridges of the two rocks align to the same point in the sky. 5/

Over 150 boulder monuments have been recorded in the Cavan Burren, some with 2, 3 or more modifications. This is a very short summary, some of this is speculative but Gaby has built up a lot of evidence - have a look in his book (free download) which gives extensive examples 6/
