🚨 The law proposed by Suella Braverman in Parl 2day to ban people claiming asylum in the UK is illegal, unworkable & utterly inhumane. The UK is playing fast & loose with its int'l commitments, ramming through flawed legislation that targets some of the most vulnerable @HRW

This unlawful, inhumane and immoral Bill amounts to an asylum ban. Punishing irregular arrivals despite the lack of safe and legal routes available for most people fleeing war and persecution. The only saving grace is that they don’t have the competency to enforce it.

"Contrary to the narrative the UK government likes to push, it is not illegal to seek asylum, and it is irrelevant how a person arrived in the UK. What is illegal is the government’s cruel and draconian plan", says my colleague Emilie McDonnell hrw.org/news/2023/03/0…

The #IllegalImmigrationBill will have ramifications far beyond the UK. The stakes could not be higher. It risks unravelling the international refugee protection regime and the hard won institution of asylum 🧵

GCC states, unmindful of the ban and the role of illegal agents, continued processing domestic work visas for Ghanaian women. Even if this meant that the worker was travelling without the requisite knowledge and in great precarity. #Ghana #KSA #Qatar #UAE migrant-rights.org/2023/04/in-gha…

Looking forward to the full report, where I hope we'll hear about the structural conditions - like the UK's #kafala-style 'tied visa' - which force #MigrantDomesticWorkers into situations of exploitation and abuse. #DomesticWorkIsWork, and MDWs need full workers rights in the UK

Does it matter how we frame labour exploitation? Specifically, how does the negative framing of ‘modern slavery’ compare with the positive framing of ‘decent work’? Natalie Sedacca and I share some insights from two recent events on Modern Slavery and Human Rights PEC blog:

"Europe will never discourage African migration while it funds the corruption that drives it" This is the best article I've read about the REAL drivers of migration and the fallacy of our attempts to stop it in a long, LONG time. Thanks evelyn groenink theguardian.com/global-develop…

While the struggles and inequities faced by Asia’s foreign domestic workers while they’re employed overseas are well-documented, the challenges that await them after they return home are less so time.com/6549753/foreig…

Development for whom? My new article shows that, in fixing (im)mobile migrant labour across rural Aus, the PALM scheme depletes socially reproductive capacities that sustain workers + families/communities in the Pacific #wgejournal bristoluniversitypressdigital.com/view/journals/…
