Like so many of you, I’m pained by these recent tragedies. And I’m exhausted by a heartbreak that never seems to stop. Right now it’s George, Breonna, and Ahmaud. Before that it was Eric, Sandra, and Michael. It just goes on, and on, and on.

More peaceful protestors and journalists have been jailed in the past week than all the bankers who were jailed for fraud during the financial collapse.

Glad to see this out in #FirstView JEPS. My terrific coauthors Mathias Poertner, Sambanis, and I find in field experiments conducted in Germany that immigrants are no less likely to be discriminated against even if they appear linguistically assimilated.

The World Values Survey asks people whether they have trouble deciding which moral rules are the right ones to follow. Koreans are least likely to agree. This is consistent with a culturally tight society in which uniform moral rules are widely accepted.

This is unbelievably upsetting to see martial law be declared (illegally) in South Korea today. The national assembly voted it down within less than 3 hours despite the military troops trying to block lawmakers from entry to the Assembly. nytimes.com/live/2024/12/0…
