When our young people are communicating stressed behaviour, we must regulate, relate, and reason in that sequence. We must not go straight for the cortex. Pupils cannot reason when their emotions are not regulated. Basic neuroscience. 🧠🌱

Who benefits from the myth that anyone in our country can succeed w/enough effort, grit & a "growth mindset"? The answer should be obvious. But who's harmed by minimizing the impact of structural barriers? This study of students offers a disturbing answer: is.gd/ammbZn

🌍 Inclusion is not a program or set of procedures, it’s a mindset that 1. all #students belong, 2. I can teach all #students well, and 3. they can all learn and grow and flourish and succeed. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL #TeacherTwitter

🎯 If a #student is having trouble with an assignment, the goal isn't to get through the assignment. The goal is to improve the skill that is giving them difficulty with the assignment. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL #TeacherTwitter

💡 A truly inclusive culture is only possible when all teachers in the school see themselves as inclusive educators and believe that all students are their students. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Teachers #UDL #TeacherTwitter

In order to get to the cortex to be able to reason with a young person, you need to be connected in some way relationally. Reasoning never works in the lower density of the brain. It is important for educators to understand the biological organisation of brain development.🧠🌱

Creating a trauma-informed restorative school requires a long term plan, not a quick one-day training. It is a commitment, not a workshop. It will take lots of different elements that impact systems change as well as classroom practices. Not a one and done. Not a quick-fix!

What's worse for learning? Being absent from school? OR Being bored at school? Both have an effect size of -0.46 or a over a year's worth of lost learning potential. This means we need to place just as much urgency on getting learners engaged as we do getting them to school.
