You can make the world of a difference to our most traumatised young people.
Every possible interaction has potential for an intervention. We need to look beneath the surface that interferes with our young people learning in the classroom environment. 🧠🌱

This article has a nice balance. I don’t know the answer. I know we have created a world that isn’t working for our youth. apple.news/AKt-KnK5lRCqIK…

Not sure how much evidence we need to convince people we need trauma informed schools. madinamerica.com/2024/04/youth-…

More on children's mental health. We have a problem we need to address, and we seem to be failing our kids. apple.news/A2R87zJKRT3eF1…

Effective classroom management practices schoolnews.co.nz/?p=30061 via SchoolNews NZ While much of the advice is sound, there is not one mention yet about needing to know about the neuroscience of brains and behaviour, or any challenge to behaviourism theory. Sigh.

Every so often, I get down on myself or just discouraged in the work. I go back to this post from December 2020. I remind myself my work has impacted lots of people. Today was one of those days, I am grateful for Miguel making this post. It serves a pick me up some days! LOL.

My new book, co-authored w/Margaret Thorsborne, OAM, really digs into this. Chapter 3 is titled 'The Neuroscience of Behavior' and we used Bruce D. Perry, M.D.,Ph.D.'s Neurosequential model to help show why traditional discipline isn't effective for most kids. It barks up the wrong tree! We can do better.

More evidence that student behavior has a basis in mental health, trauma, and environmental settings. You're never going to punish your way out of this. Punitive consequences will only make it worse. There is much hope in the restorative, trauma-informed approach!

What parenting practice at age 3 makes it more likely that the child at age 5 will be disobedient, demanding, and mean? Permissiveness? Nope, guess again. It's spanking. Why? Because a kid 'learns to be aggressive by being treated with aggression': tinyurl.com/mu4hc2aa

For my educator friends in the Northeast. Kids might be a little shook-up, no pun intended. Circle them up! Let them make sense of their feelings right now. Some may be just excited. Some may be scared. Some may be shocked. It's new for them, help them process. Co-regulate!

“As pediatricians, we don't recommend corporal punishment. We know it's not an effective form of discipline. Spanking and hitting a child might help a behavior in the short term. They might be fearful and obedient,”gse.harvard.edu/ideas/edcast/2…

I feel like I say this everyday. The behaviors are not from soft discipline issues. We set up a toxic culture and our kids are not okay. npr.org/2024/04/02/124…

Trauma isn't just about what's happened to us.

Often it's about what hasn't happened for us.

Too often we think of trauma as a sequence of events. Let us remember, that the absence of something, someone, qualities or experiences, are often sufficient.
