1/4 #WSTC5 #ConsSesh2 │Cape #gannets on Penguin (Bird) Island have been victims to #seal predation for over a decade. When the juveniles spread their wings for the first time seals predate on the #fledglings in the water.

2/4 #WSTC5 #ConsSesh2 │We studied the effect of #fish biomass and #predator control on the predation on Cape #gannets. Observations on #seal predation and #fledgling rate were made by #CapeNature from 2007 to 2018.

3/4 #WSTC5 #ConsSesh2 │Increased #predation was related to the likelihood of the years in which #predator control occurred. Predator control decreased the predation on an #intra-annual scale but the effect thereof on an #interannual scale was negligible.

4/4 #WSTC5 #ConsSesh2 │During years with reduced #fish biomass increased #seal predation was experienced, therefore, we suggest that #management focus should be on fish #conservation rather than #predator control measures.
