First plankton sample in Naples! Samplers were first briefed on CTD operation and net deployment. With the support of the Advanced Mobile Lab, researchers discovered the complexity and variety of the samples quickly after the sampling! 📸Schwab Yannick, Michael Bonadonna /EMBL

When people tell me we know everything about diatoms and I see this paper coming out. Major symbiosis discovered playing significant role for bio geochemical cycles in the ocean. Small interactions big impact.

A new collaborative study by EMBL & EPFL scientists shows the way animals do cell division may have evolved long before animals did. The study suggests different modes of mitosis may be linked to different life cycles in certain marine protists. embl.org/news/science-t…

1) Remarkable. Apart from some Beroe cucumis I saw in the water yesterday (my nets caught none), there were virtually no zooplankton in my fine or coarse net samples, just a few cladocera, bipinnaria & copepod nauplii. Is it me? Here's a video of Beroe from last year ZEISS Microscopy
