All hands on deck this morning as the #CMEBelize #seagrass #bluecarbon team are busily processing yesterday’s long cores and biomass samples. This afternoon, we’re heading back out for another #drone and #quadrat survey with local hosts TASA. CME Programme National Oceanography Centre
The National Oceanography Centre CME Programme #CMEBelize team are linking #sedimentcores, #quadrat surveys, #drone footage and #satellitedata to quantify #seagrass #bluecarbon on #TurneffeAtoll. Here’s David Price explaining how the #drones he flies fit into the study:
Whilst David Price and his #drones map #seagrass extent from above, the rest of the National Oceanography Centre CME Programme #CMEBelize team are in the water gathering data the old fashioned way! Han Brittain explains:
As part of ongoing CME Programme #fieldwork in #Belize, ExploringOurOcean masters student Stephen Carpenter is getting his first taste of fieldwork, linking reflectiveness and waterdepth measurements to satellite data for #seagrass mapping (1/2)
As our National Oceanography Centre CME Programme #CMEBelize #seagrass #bluecarbon team say a reluctant farewell to our hosts #TASA on #TurneffeAtoll, Han Brittain, Stephen Carpenter and team move to the CZMAI BELIZE lab in #BelizeCity to dry close to 1000 samples ready for analysis back in the UK.
Kicking off another day with our #cmebelize #BlueCarbon research session. James Hunt National Oceanography Centre, David Price and Stephen Carpenter UoS OES, and Eliceo Cobb of the Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association outline the progress we’ve made this year:
Some interesting applications advances in Earth Observation @ RSPSoc2019. AI and deep learning are the future. Thank you for having me Satellite Applications Catapult
Session 5 of the National Oceanography Centre CMEP Virtual Workshop series is in full swing! Today is a follow on from Friday's session: Marine Survey Tools P2 - How do you map the shallow water environments in the coastal zone? Hosted by Dr Tim Le Bas & Stephen Carpenter
The National Oceanography Centre CME Blue Carbon in Antigua team are heading out for fieldwork today. Very excited to start work on this incredible project with fantastic colleagues. #CME #Fieldwork #BlueCarbon
All the #Antigua #BlueCarbon CME Programme equipment has arrived ready for mobilisation tomorrow! Some very happy National Oceanography Centre scientists with their instruments.
The CME Programme #BlueCarbon in #Antigua coring team scoping out some #seagrass sampling sites for later in the week. #fieldwork
Stephen Carpenter collecting seagrass samples for the National Oceanography Centre CME Programme #BlueCarbon in #Antigua project. So much essential work on this project has been done by #ECRs and they’ve helped to make the coring program a huge success! We’re very excited for the lab work now! #Fieldwork
The coring team led by Dr Claire Evans from National Oceanography Centre drying the core samples from #Antigua seagrass beds for #BlueCarbon assessment as part of the CME Programme #ECRs #Fieldwork Stephen Carpenter #Analytical_Services_Antigua
Masks aren’t just good for COVID-19 safety! They really ‘mask’ the smell of these core samples containing decomposing sargassum for the study of its contribution to #BlueCarbon in #Antigua National Oceanography Centre look forward to their arrival! CME Programme Isobel Yeo
As part of the EO4SD project, NOC satellite team has modified one of the leading shoreline monitoring tools CoastSat. CoastSat_nocs is now live! Assess shoreline change in your area using the newly accessible code via GitHub eo4sd-marine.eu/news/coastsatn… National Oceanography Centre EO4SD-Lab
Thrilled that our #BlueCarbon🌱research programme in #Belize has produced its first two papers!🙌 Published in Remote Sensing MDPI, they cover the #remotesensing aspects of our #seagrass work, presenting new methods via drone (led by David Price) & satellite (Stephen Carpenter).
Next, Stephen Carpenter builds upon this, using UAV maps to ground truth #sentinel2 satellite data 🛰️. This method produced ~ 30x more training data than traditional methods without substantial loss of accuracy (R2 = 0.73 over ~250 km2): mdpi.com/2072-4292/14/3…
