Years ago, long after I graduated, I took a class Fresno State which “forced” me to read lots of Saroyan-one of the best academic decisions of my life. Today, after my first visit to the William Saroyan House Museum, I read the short story “Laughter”, which was glum, but totally his voice.

William Saroyan was celebrated by the United States and the U.S.S.R. — the Soviet Union — in a joint stamp issue in 1991, 10 years after his death.
