I don’t want to be the Womenswear Gal. I want to talk about how by the late 19th century, 5 million birds representing 50 species had been killed to put on ladies’ hats and muffs and that’s why doing anything with a native bird species in the US is illegal.

Why are we so comfortable denigrating the creative output of our grandmothers? It may seem insignificant within the context of much more urgent global issues, but in a new piece for Hyperallergic, I argue that it is symptomatic of the systematic devaluation of feminized labor.

My baby, the Royal School of Needlework Collection and Archive website, is now live! First up are 100 objects that represent the breadth and depth of our holdings. I’ve put my heart and soul into this, as have my wonderful team of volunteers. Do check it out! collections.royal-needlework.org.uk/home

Further proof (if you needed it) that cuts to the arts and humanities are driven by an ideology of ignorance rather than any commitment to 'sound fiscal management' 👇🏽

Thanks Caitlin Cassidy for another insightful and essential piece!

Does anyone recognise this town, painted by Gilbert Spencer, probably c. 1920s? The tower of the church (or cathedral?) is quite distinctive.

“Some will doubtlessly cheer the trimming of supposedly ‘low-value’ subject areas. They may be less enthusiastic about the knock-on effect their demise would have on [STEM] subjects, or the wider impact of rapid restructuring … a £130 billion [sector].”
