In 1970, South Korea and Taiwan had the highest revealed comparative advantage in the following industries: vegetables, cork/wood products, and raw silk. They went on to invest in completely different industries and benefited enormously — they *defied* comparative advantage.

In fact, in the 1960s, the World Bank advised South Korea *against* investing in steel because it wasn't aligned with its comparative advantage. Korea ignored this advice, and founded POSCO, a state-owned steel company. POSCO is now one of the world's largest steel producers.

Scott’s right! 👉Allowing US companies to raise prices while selling more is literally the whole goal of tariffs >>that’s why they call it protection! 👉So. Yeah. What did you expect?

Out of 1,325 global sanctions since 1949, 486 have been imposed by the US, which currently administers over thirty sanctions programmes — making it responsible for three times as many sanctions as any other country or international body. indianexpress.com/article/busine…

Industrial Policy has been 'too hard' to study econometrically. This is bc of multiple equilibria -- we don't know if the world we observe *has to* be that way, or if its in one of several equilibria. Tishara Garg's phenomenal JMP solves this. It's revolutionary for IP research.

With 50% tariffs, we are definitely in the lower two quadrants now, leaning towards the first. The real test for our foreign policy begins now. A crucial variable is the US-China relationship. Geopolitics should now feature prominently in business strategy conversations.

The reason industrial policy is too hard to study econometrically is because you shouldn’t be studying it econometrically. If all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail.

My latest piece. I argue that the language used by Trump around the additional tariff on India basically makes it a sanction. And the only rule in the world of sanctions is naked might. A free-to-read link: bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…
