A decent gap in bad weather yesterday meant the team could get out and ring another Raven nest in an abandoned towerhouse. The biggest brood of the year so far with 4 chicks. At over 1kg each they are the biggest passerine in the world BTO National Parks and Wildlife Service BirdWatch Ireland EURING

First spring BTO ringing session at Clogheen Marsh yesterday. Fairly poor 49 birds of 12 species, but good to get returning Chiffchaff and Blackcap from last year. Also a Greenfinch weighing in at 35.4g heavily laden in fat assumedly on migration National Parks and Wildlife Service BirdWatch Ireland

This year’s 1st visit to Cape Clear Bird Obs started with 2 Carrion Crow yesterday and 2 Hawfinch today. But highlight was first day of BTO Rock Dove RAS finding ‘BH’. He was originally ringed as adult in June 2016 and at 7 years 9 months 27 days is now the oldest ever recorded! EURING

I was told of a Mute Swan Blarney Castle & Gardens which had a ring on its leg and on Saturday Róisín Towe managed to read the ring. It has only moved 7km, but was ringed by John O'Halloran at The Lough nearly 21 years ago, making it the new Irish longevity record BTO BirdWatch Ireland EURING

A thread🧵 1/18

Weedkiller is not a magic eraser. It has severe, often long-lasting ecological consequences & we need to curb its use, right now. It is doused over the length & breadth of the country for convenience, but the convenience is only ours, if a convenience at all.

The Chough at our two cam sites are continuing to nest-build though we've noticed they don't bring in nest material when it's raining (and it's been a very wet week!). They also spend time preening themselves but in this clip the male is grooming his partner

At the moment one of the Chough at this site is roosting in the box, and will most likely stay there all night, so take a look if you'd like to see a Chough sleeping! youtube.com/watch?v=yMnvzd…

Another White-tailed Eagle shot in Ireland! I helped tag this bird and many other dedicated people assisted with its introduction. So terribly disappointing….. rte.ie/news/connacht/…
