I scanned many #insects using #microCT, but a structure that always strikes me is the #weevil proventriculus (‘forestomach’) - the cross-section of its bulb resembles an eight-pointed star. Its internal teeth are used for grinding food particles. #weevilwednesday #digestion

The first of two weeks identifying weevils at the University of Costa Rica insect collection is complete - check out this handsome Poecilogaster from Zurquí de Moravia!

I just heard early this morning that noted curculionid taxonomist Charlie O’Brien has died from Parkinson’s disease. Ypu and your encyclopaedic knowledge of weevils will be sorely missed. RIP and wherever you are I hope they have lots of green enchiladas!!

Collected some agave seed pods in hopes of finding larvae of Peltophorus adustus (Fall, 1906). Cracked a few open and there are definitely some weevil larvae in there! Immature stages are undescribed though feeding damage on the seeds has been documented.

Flattened and expanded hind tibiae occur in several genera of conoderine weevils, fanciest in the genus Tachylechriops Heller, 1895. Specimen from French Guiana.

Eating vegetables has finally paid off! The pepper weevil, Anthonomus eugenii Cano, 1894, is a Central American species established in the southern US. This one started out in a red bell pepper in California and journeyed to a grocery store in Arizona.

Today, our @Biomedisa paper was finally published! :) The video shows a Trigonopterus #weevil that was semi-automatically segmented from #synchrotron #microCT data using the software’s semi-automatic segmentation algorithm. Check out the paper on: nature.com/articles/s4146…

1. Large individuals are often not exact scaled-up versions of small ones. As body size changes so does the relative size of traits. The Jousting weevil provides an excellent opportunity to study scaling because of their extreme size variation #Animbehav2021

Males fight vigorously for mating opportunities & females mate multiply so competition likely continues in the post-copulatory arena. Does weapon size correlate negatively with post-copulatory traits? #Animbehav2021

For a deeper look showing the reversed allocation towards pre- and post-copulatory sexually selected traits in these jousting weevils here is another graphic by Peter Marting

A fun bit of detective work with @DiazGrisalesV to (re)discover the correct name for the single Heilipus species in the United States!

Not Wednesday, but always a good day for #weevils 😅. Here is one of Salvatore Anzaldo favorites, a super cute Cylindrocopturinus hainesi Hespenheide, from Mexico 🇲🇽. #Curculionidae #Conoderinae #ASUCOB #ASUBiocollections serv.biokic.asu.edu/ecdysis/collec…
