Saw the question 'how is it that more than 0.13% of Canadians are impacted by the budget?'

Reposting my long-winded answer below:

There are a few things.

1. The number of Canadians reporting gains in a single year is largely irrelevant. The deferred capital gain on all

Actually yes. If the 'anti war' movement was always right:
- Saddam would have annexed Kuwait
- Slobodan Milošević would have committed unchecked genocide
- Much, if not all, of Ukraine would be Russia
These anti-war students aren't anti war, they are pro war, just for the other

Investing time and money into a business and generating a return on those years of effort: “Bad! Must tax more!”

Passively riding the government-induced real estate wave on your principal residence and generating an equal return: “Nothing to see here.”

Hmmm..
..if only there were a group out there awaiting imminent Elections Canada approval for their application to form 'a centrist party with corporate sensibilities'....

The media keeps saying only 0.13% of Canadians are affected by the increase in capital gains inclusions rates.

That's wrong.

Publicly traded companies that earn capital gains just had their tax rates go up.

Anyone holding Canadian stocks is affected.

Great thread below.

At a time when there is a severe family doctor shortage in Canada, why did we take away one of the major tax advantages they had by incorporating and building a portfolio in their professional corporation? 👇

Bill Morneau, Trudeau’s finance minister from 2015-2020, slammed the capital gains tax raise today. “This was very clearly something that while I was there, we resisted. We resisted it for a very specific reason: concerned about the growth of the country.” bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Andrew Coyne 🇺🇦🇮🇱 Max Fawcett 🇨🇦 Trevor Tombe But it fails to align those things for an individual earning gains directly vs. an individual earning them through a corporation. It distorts the principle of integration. Can debate the merits of increasing the inclusion rate vs. not, but as proposed it’s poorly designed IMO.

This guy is impossible not to really, really like. Never heard of him before this weekend. Big time fan, now.
And I'm sure I'm not alone.

Canada’s top tax rate hits at ~$236K. Trudeau framed that rate as targeting “the wealthiest 1%” when he introduced it.

Per MoneySense, you need income of $269K to qualify for an average detached home in the GTA.

Curious to see how JT defines “wealthiest” this time around.

Canada should lift its ban on weapons export to Israel, designate the IRGC as a terrorist org, push for the re-imposition of severe sanctions on Iran and support Israel at the UN. No waffling. Be on the side of right from now on.

One or two missiles or drones would be symbolic. Hundreds of? That’s an overt act of war, after years of covert war.

As Iran launches missiles at our ally Israel, I ask my colleagues who voted for a motion to not authorize arms sales to Israel, which would include defensive ones, whether they understand the implications of what they voted for. This misguided policy must be reversed now.

Make that the most national championships in US college hockey.
Our 16 Golden Bears Hockey Canadian national championships still rank #1 in North American collegiate titles.

If you take a few steps back, seeing Jordan and Saudi Arabia helping defend Israel against Iranian attacks is a pretty stunning development.
