Delighted once again to welcome bestselling novelist Ben Kane who gave a talk to B Block on Everyday Life in Ancient Rome and signed copies of his books.

Great to start the new term viewing the fantastic conservation work done by Alex Carrington ACR on the rare Old Priory wall paintings, which probably date from the earliest years of the School.

Now this is unusual, the tesserae used for the figure are larger than those for the background. I can only assume they used tesserae cut for different projects to put this one together.

While in Seville we viewed this 3rd Century #Roman mosaic, the Triumph of Bacchus, in the Archaeological Museum. The triumph is Bacchus`s conquest of India & he is driving a carriage pulled by tigers, alongside a satyr. You can read more by Following Hadrian - buff.ly/2QamdyG

The #Roman city of #Jerash (Jordan). At its height, it had a population of up to 20,000, with numerous temples, theatres, & a hippodrome. It was one of the Decapolis cities - an informal league of 10 semi-autonomous cities on the eastern frontier of the Empire #AncientSiteSunday
