We need more Members of Congress who believe in smart, progressive national security and nuclear weapons policies that will make America strong.

On July 17, 1945, the day after the Trinity nuclear test, nuclear physicist & Council founder Leo Szilard wrote a petition to President Truman urging him to consider the moral responsibilities of atomic use and to not use an atomic bomb against Japan before asking for surrender.

Unidentified stormtroopers. Unmarked cars. Kidnapping protesters and causing severe injuries in response to graffiti. These are not the actions of a democratic republic. Homeland Security’s actions in Portland undermine its mission. Trump & his stormtroopers must be stopped.

This no doubt reflects the feelings of any of us so honored as to serve with John Lewis, and call him colleague and friend. The nation will surely miss him.

I wrote about two of my favorite things: The #WestWing & nuclear threat reduction. While the show still resonates for its humanity, optimism & humor, the policy issues can sometimes seem as antiquated as the beepers & giant cell phones. But not when it comes to nuclear policy.

Of the existential threats to humanity (pandemic, climate change & nuclear catastrophe), a nuclear disaster from mistake or miscalculation can end the world as we know it in 30 minutes or less. We can do something to lower the risk that Trump has exacerbated over 3 years- VOTE

Calls for increasing spending on nuclear weapons is a predictable reaction from people who benefit from nuke production. Why aren't we asking how even more nukes improve our deterrent at all when we already have more than enough to deter - might there be a better approach?

My former colleague Tulsi Gabbard 🌺 is spot on when she warns about the dangers of nuclear war. I wonder if she can convince her fellow political elites and her boss to support proven tactics to reduce nuclear threats: diplomacy and arms control.
