Excessive guarantor requirements are a tool for discrimination - thanks to Alicia Kennedy for backing our demands to restrict them in the House of Lords on Monday. Although the amendment wasn't voted on, the Minister did agree to meet with renter groups to discuss further.

One of the changes made to the #rentersrightsbill this week would add an additional deposit for pet owners. We don't see the need for this - and as we told BBC News (UK), it could rule out pet ownership for many renters. The government should remove it. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

One area the #RentersRightsBill still needs to fix is unfair guarantor requirements. As Georgia's story on BBC Radio 4 Today shows, these can block access to housing. Thanks Alex Sobel MP for Leeds Central and Headingley for raising this issue - if a renter can afford the rent, they shouldn't need a guarantor.

A cap on rent rises would give renters real security, reducing homelessness and poverty, and "mean people have more money to spend in their communities instead of lining their landlords' pockets." RRC's Tom Darling on rising rents in Yahoo News uk.news.yahoo.com/renting-costs-…

Asked for a guarantor even though you could afford the rent? Excessive guarantor requests can discriminate against poorer renters - when the Renters' Rights Bill returns to parliament it should be amended to restrict them. Our Press Officer Paul Shanks on BBC Radio 5 Live last week 👇

Last week Zoopla stats showed average monthly rents have grown by £200 per month in just 3 years. Out of control rents are pushing people out of their homes and communities - the government must put the brakes on. The RRC's Paul Shanks spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live last week.

Forced out by a £400 rent rise after living with damp and mould - stories like Jason's are far too common. As the RRC's Tom Darling says here, we need a cap on rent increases to prevent rent hike evictions like this. The government's rent tribunal won't get the job done.

Great work from coalition members Safer Renting and Marks Out Of Tenancy 🏘️ in this powerful documentary from Tarah Welsh on illegal HMOs. Councils must be properly resourced to tackle this scourge - and ensure the Renters' Rights Bill has a real impact. bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod…
