Adult expectations for some children are lower because of class, trauma, race, family. It must be the opposite. Children can, must, and need to be fully literate... ESPECIALLY if their road is tough; they must have skills, focus, and grit. Don't just feel for them. Teach them.

This is so important to understand, particularly when students with #dyslexia are caused to feel shame or lacking in intelligence in their environment. Wolf’s call to combat these stereotypes in our definition of dyslexia is critical. Loved seeing Virginia Sturm work cited. 💙

Learning from Dr. Wolf was such a gift today. Getting to connect with her as a fellow mother of children with #dyslexia was just the most amazing, human moment. How she signed her brilliant book could not have been more perfect or meant more. Grateful to be part of this work. 💙

In my doctoral program at MSJ, we created a teacher resource & need feedback on that resource for our portfolio. I made a resource for teaching syllable division, which includes the research & rationale. Scripted slides for instruction & student resources included. Link in bio.

Extremely important point from Hugh Catts at #dyslexiacon2024: The biggest piece missing from the IDA 2002 definition of dyslexia was the psychosocial problems associated with struggling to learn to read.

Mme Lockhart Robert Pondiscio 💯 In swimming, a child who can’t stay afloat is obvious. In reading, the drowning is quiet. You don’t notice it until they are already underwater. Explicit instruction saves children.

Reading is not natural. Children do not learn to read simply by being surrounded by books or exposed to print. Unlike spoken language, reading must be taught through explicit instruction in how sounds connect to letters. Evidence based reading instruction matters for ALL students

Grateful for the opportunity to write about Structured Literacy. It’s important we understand the what, how, who, and why to give every student access to effective literacy instruction. 📚
