Victorian schools are about to follow Department for Education SA South Australia's lead in teaching kids to read using phonics...but what exactly is phonics, and why should we use it to teach kids to read? This article by Anne Castles - moved to @annecastles.bsky.social, Saskia Kohnen (she/her/hers) and professor Rauno Parilla provides a very

Always something to learn from Pamela Snow as she chats to Brendan Lee about evidence-based reading instruction & why changing teacher practice can be so challenging. learnwithlee.net/kft-pamelasnow/

All schools should take the Reading Pledge, it’s an evidence-based framework for schools to dramatically reduce the number of children who finish primary school unable to read proficiently and support struggling readers in secondary school fivefromfive.com.au/reading-pledge… Learning Difficulties Australia

Thanks Jennifer. Your robust research has been instrumental. Explicit instruction and systematic phonics are proven as most effective ways to teach children to read and we need to do what’s best for children - regardless of postcode, languages spoken at home or neurodiversity.

It's always a privilege to host guest contributions on #TheSnowReport. This one is titled "A letter to my son" & was written by Heidi Gregory - Dyslexia Victoria Support. One for policy makers & school leaders who have resisted engagement about rigour in reading instruction👇 pamelasnow.blogspot.com/2024/09/guest-…

Great to see this revised and more accurate definition of decoding in the new Victorian Department of Education classroom materials. Well done to the team on their responsiveness on this.

Looking forward to another fantastic SBP event! Don’t miss this if you’re a teacher, SLP or anyone involved in education. Lots of great speakers. I’ll be talking about why knowledge of the phonological structure of language is essential when teaching phonics. See you there!
