When I started coaching, my goal was to become a UEFA B licence coach. I thought it would mean that I'd be a good coach, now I realise that there's so much more to good coaching than badges. Things like experience, people skills, communication skills & enthusiasm are priceless.

One thing that I've learnt over the years is that you should make sure that you are coaching somewhere you feel wanted and valued. If you don't feel that, you are better off finding a new environment where you are wanted. Don't stay in an environment where you aren't valued.

As coaches, we don't get a 'well done' or 'you're doing a good job' very often. And a lot of us tend to be quite negative about our coaching (me included at times) So when you see another coach doing well, tell them. Spread a little positivity to help their confidence grow.

Rob Porter (@rjpcoach) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Not every environment is right for every coach. If you're in an environment that isn't right for you or you aren't appreciated in the environment you're in, make a change. Staying somewhere that isn't right for you isn't productive. Find somewhere that's that's right fit.

Just because your focus is player development doesn't mean that you shouldn't enjoy winning. Winning and development don't always go hand in hand, depending on the environment and level of challenge. When you are developing players, winning is a great byproduct.

Rob Porter (@rjpcoach) 's Twitter Profile Photo

We all have setbacks with our coaching, times when we are struggling, when we don't get opportunities we've gone for, or when we leave a club or organisation. But those experiences make us stronger. We all get knocked down. What counts is getting back up & coming back stronger💪

Courses are great, but the only way we really get better at coaching is by coaching. Gaining theoretical knowledge is great, but on the grass is where things come to life. Add tools to your coaching toolbox, but make sure that you understand how those tools work by using them.

For me, passion and personality are the differences between good and great coaching. Most coaches can plan a decent session with good coaching points, but coaches who bring sessions to life with their character get more out of players. Don't be a coaching robot. Be yourself.

Completing my A License has always been a personal goal and while it may just be a certificate it represents so much more to me. It’s confirmation that hard work and countless hours out on the grass has paid off and gives me the confidence to keep pushing on without hesitation.
