I have enjoyed writing this short chapter with Dr Alex Blower - Made for a Trade; looking at #workingclass masculinity, access, and belonging in #HigherEducation - from the perspective of two working class male academics.

Very nice to see this doing the rounds again. When I was a little kid I used to go to Manchester and come back with the accent. Harry and Paul thought this was very funny so wrote the sketch. The timing was perfect. 😎

Our research found that 30% of university students report being mocked, criticised or singled out as a result of their accent. Action to tackle accent bias should be seen as an important diversity issue in both educational settings and the workplace. suttontrust.com/our-research/s…

I have sector colleagues who have ended up with an abuser. Men we all met and thought "no red flags" and "so great you are dating a man who is engaged against VAWG!". If domestic abuse experts can be fooled by manipulative abusers, everyone can. Do not blame victims.

if you are starting a teacher education course next week, then don't let anyone tell you that your accent or way of talking is improper, unsuitable, in need of modification, or symptomatic of unacceptable teaching. the way you talk is beautiful. 🩷 tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

"Many private schools have ditched GCSEs – which state schools have to follow – in preference for the easier International GCSEs. These IGCSEs allow students to do coursework – something binned in the state system nearly a decade ago – and the questions, in general, are less

And this is why we dont talk about class in politics, media or academia - because middle class spaces & the middle class are there to reproduce the class system. Its the most important thing in being middle class.

28% of teachers in England personally provided food to pupils in the summer term out of concern for their welfare, according to FareShare. Our research has also shown that hunger among pupils is a growing issue. The government must take action. independent.co.uk/news/education…

Private school charges pupils £24,500 a year but resented paying cleaners £13.15 an hour Contractor wanted to slash working time from 43 to 38 weeks a year, deny sick pay and other rights. Well done to workers for resisting. Join a union. theguardian.com/education/arti…

Hive mind: can anybody direct me to the percentage of working-class (medical) doctors? I have the Social Mobility Commission report from 2016, and Friedman et al's 2017 study, but wondered if there is anything more recent? Thank you 💫 Alliance of Working-Class Academics

They want you to be “outraged” by a painting being moved, by a politician dancing on holiday & by smoking bans They want you to NOT pay attention to the impoverished communities, the really rich avoiding taxes, the corruption that goes unpunished & the pandemic of male violence

Ticket companies know what they are doing. The "buzz" of getting into the buy phase after 4 hrs is the same dopamine hit gamblers experience. At that stage, £150 to £400 price rise no longer is a choice, it's an impulse buy. An unethical/should be illegal business practice.

We’ve been trying to reduce the cost of school uniforms with some local schools for a while. We’ll continue to work on this, as parents tell us they are really struggling to buy what they consider to be unnecessary branded items. theguardian.com/education/arti…

Wd any1 like to do a review of my book? Its OA (see below) I'd especially love an ECR or WCA to review it. A book review was the first thing I ever wrote tinyurl.com/3s7a6p5b (read a few before writing). A book review is something your supervisor often suggests you do too
