ICS has worked, if often imperfectly, with communities whose lives are affected by structures and histories of oppression.

Unlike the views expressed by our WSU colleague Professor Pru Goward in the AFR, our research does not find members of a so-called underclass ‘neglectful of their children’.

Our research also does not find value in other pejorative labels applied without support of robust evidence and analysis.

As Liz Allen has observed, such labels cause real and deeply felt hurt, for many of us as well as for many in the communities we serve. Rather than advancing scholarly debate, they instead return us to dated misconceptions. We need to move past them.
