30°C above normal in the Arctic today. 40°C above normal in the Antarctic today. It would be unbelievable if it were not true. And it is terrifying beyond words. The war we have waged against the natural world has, in climatic terms, just gone nuclear.

Pleased to see that the Privileges Committee has agreed to take the approach I suggested a while back (in this article in the The New Statesman) and has asked Boris Johnson to attend and give evidence under oath. A sensible move in the circumstances. newstatesman.com/comment/2022/0…

Lorna Hackett speaking about IPP prisoner still inside 17 yrs later on a 2 and half yr sentence. I am McKenzie friend to this young man and he should be released. His family are heartbroken.. END IPP

As time passes, people serving IPP are becoming a forgotten generation of people in prison. Over the next few days we’ll tweet new FOI releases & personal stories that reveal the continued plight of people on IPP, why it isn’t working, & why it can't simply be managed away.

A brief update on the proposed IPP prisoners amendment to the Victims and Prisoners Bill that I have been working on with Lorna Hackett Happily the amendment was tabled during the recess by John McDonnell. It has also received strong support in the House of Lords (1/2).

My latest piece for Prospect - jointly authored with Lorna Hackett - examines the tragedy of Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) and highlights proposed amendments to the Victims and Prisoners Bill which could help end the injustice. prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/62934…

What should we do about “the greatest single stain on our criminal justice system”? Lorna Hackett and Alexander Horne say that of the two proposed amendments for the Victims and Prisoners Bill, the answer isn’t to choose one or the other—it’s both. prospectmagazine.co.uk/politics/62934…

The Mail wrote some absolute nonsense about prisoners working on ROTL yesterday. This is why they’re wrong. By me ⁦The Spectator⁩ spectator.co.uk/article/dont-c…

Aaron Graham was 26 years old when he was sentenced to two years and 124 days for grievous bodily harm in 2005. Eighteen years later, he’s still in prison on an Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentence. His sister Cherrie worries about the impact on his mental health

A very welcome and impressive feature on the disgraceful plight of IPP prisoners. Please read this. Politicians presume that the public support this barbaric never-ending sentence. Please let them know if you do not.

Very pleased to see that the clause relating to IPP mentors and advocates (which I have been promoting with Lorna Hackett) was presented by Baroness Blower (having also been supported by Lord Garnier KC and Lord Blunkett): hansard.parliament.uk/lords/2024-03-…
