Politicians wanting to solve leasehold should bear this in mind. Instead of lumping it into a 'knottingly complex problem' deal with the individual solvable chunks. Ground rent is only one of them and not even the most important.

Great work from Julie Marson MP. Given the cross party support for radical leasehold reform how did we end up with such an anaemic act?
An article in todays Times gives us clue.

This is a ridiculous argument. It's like claiming better locks and a burglar alarm represent a net transfer of wealth from burglars to homeowners.

Great to see Chi Onwurah πŸ’™ speaking out on behalf of leaseholders again.
There is a consensus across the political parties yet it can't be changed.
It makes you wonder where power really lies in our democracy.

Nice article, but if you live in leasehold property and you do try to improve the appearance of the common areas some high handed and authoritarian managing agent will compel removal of even the most modest decorative improvements. A picture on the wall for example.

The UK has fallen to its lowest score on international corruption/transparency indices. This should bother leaseholders because this is the substrate that enables freeholder lobbyists to practice their dark arts.

Great work from Chi Onwurah πŸ’™ and a reminder that leasehold blight is not just about London or the cartoon bad guys - overseas freeholders. The Charitable sector and HAs in Newcastle abuse this form of tenure. Gaming the BSA, misusing reserve funds and botched major works.

'power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely'
FHers MAs and HA's have something close to absolute power. If they are continue managing our blocks, they should be compelled to seek a fresh mandate every 3-5 years.

'Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely' that is why we have elections every 5 years.
FHers and MAs have something close to absolute power. MAs should be compelled to seek a mandate every 3-5 years and only be allowed to manage with the consent of the 'owners'.

Charles Grey's statue. His Government, in the face of resistance from land owners, brought about the 1932 Reform Act which slightly shifted power away from established land ownership.
He would recognise the squealing from land-owners today in response to leasehold reform.

Good speech. However, it isn’t just about shadowy foreign entities, though they may be the worst. The contagion has affected HAs too.

The actions of Residential Freehold Association , Knight Frank etc remind me a little of the Steve Bannon's 'flood the zone with s**t' policy. This is not about persuasion: this is about disorientation, so nobody quite knows what to believe.

This made me laugh, the research cited in Housing Today, is little more than a few opinions. The sponsors, Knight Frank, failed to disclose their conflict of interest. The paragraph below is taken from the RICS property journal
