At the Environment Agency we own and manage a lot of bridges. As part of our Graduate Engineer Training Scheme we’re out with bridge specialists to give some of our Graduate Engineers an introduction to bridge inspection techniques.

A successful day at Ynys Y Fro reservoirs to see the new spillway works, followed by a meeting of Reservoir Owners hosted by Welsh Water to discuss changes to the reservoir safety regime, works delivery and sharing skills development across our organisations. #ReservoirManagement

Currently the Area Duty Manager in the North East responding to today’s rainfall. It’s the worst time of year for leaf litter on screens. We’ve closed flood gates in Yarm, Morpeth, Rothbury, Neasham and Croft to keep communities safe. We’ll continue to monitor through the night.

Great to meet with Scottish Water at Winterhope Reservoir for a statutory inspection and a discussion on reservoir management and delivery of works. And great to get some concrete dam and Scottish Act experience for my own Reservoir Supervising Engineer development.

Good day at the Reservoir Supervising Engineers Forum. It’s great to see so much reservoir expertise and experience in one place. Thanks to John Foster at Motts for the opportunity to join the panel discussing the exercising and testing of emergency flood plans.

Another great experience learning from the Dutch at the annual test closure of the Maeslantkering. Another smooth test closure and fantastic to see such a huge moveable structure working well to protect Rotterdam. Thank you to Rijkswaterstaat for the invite.

Excellent tour of the Eastern Scheldt Barrier and Haringvliet Sluices. Built after the 1953 floods, the storm surge barriers are part of the delta works which protect so much of the low-lying parts of the Netherlands. Thanks so much to Hessel Voortman for the tour and information

Storm #Babet will bring some very wet and windy weather over the next few days. Lots of yellow on the Flood Guidance Statement, but Amber in the North East. Widespread heavy rain with up to 100mm possible in the hills. Potential for significant flooding. Be prepared. #StormBabet

The Amber rainfall warning has been extended, with more regions turning Amber on the Flood Guidance Statement. Significant flooding impacts are probable. Up to 120mm of rain possible on east facing slopes. If you’re at risk of flooding you should take action now. #StormBabet

It’s like a winter scene in Whitley Bay this morning. The East Coast is getting a battering. Current swell height is 25-30ft with winds gusting around 50mph. There will be some dangerous conditions on coastal frontages around high tide this evening. Don’t get close. #StormBabet

We’ve deployed 185m of temporary flood barrier along Newcastle Quayside. This is due to a combination of high tides and surge which have created increased river levels in Newcastle. The barriers will remain in place for the next couple of days until high tide levels drop.

Visiting Dolgarrog with the Major Reservoir Owners Group. Sobering to see the breach in Eigiau Dam that resulted in the death of 16 residents of the town in 1925. The incident led to the first Reservoirs Act in 1930 which has meant no reservoir deaths since that fateful night.

Great couple of days in Scotland with the Major Reservoir Owners Group. Lots to discuss, not least the plans for Reservoir Safety Reforms in England and Wales. Thanks to SSE - A Better World of Energy for the tour of Pitlochry Hydroelectric Dam.
