Vienna’s centre really pushes at enclosure ratios (very high & often narrow streets). Nor is it all pedestrian as here. But gosh it’s good. Walkable. Beautiful. Intense. Huge variety of homes, offices, museums, shops all within not many minutes of each other.

Question: @samerbagaeen As a Governor at Cardinal Newman School Cardinal Newman Catholic School how can you justify the removal of the Old Shoreham Road cycle lanes now that children have lost the option of cycling more safely to school? You knew this would disadvantage women and children.

Some people think that the "cycling lobby" think everyone should ride a bike all the time everywhere & think it's not possible/ practical and move on. It's not about that. If everyone swapped a couple of short distance car journeys a week the effects would be huge.

Some fascinating walking & cycling stats out this week show Active Travel on the rise: 🚶‍♂️ Average walking trips of over a mile 🔼 by 34% to 87 trips per person in 2020 compared to 65 trips per person in 2019. 🚴‍♀️ Average miles cycled in 2020 (88 miles per person) 🔼 62% on 2019

I'm reminded every day when I cross the OSR that without the cycle lane I live in a less nice, more dangerous place. There used to be bikes passing me on every single outing. It was just nicer & felt like the start of something exciting. I'm back to living by a grey busy main rd.
