Weymouth: a fairly decent night considering the overnight deluge. First Centre-barred Sallow of the autumn, Scorched Carpet, Satin Wave, Orange Swift, Wormwood Pug and this smart Palpita vitrealis. Also a rather worn Epinotia ramella (tbc) would be a new moth for here.

Apologies, a bit gruesome! Having found a dead Shrew in the garden, I thought I should make sure it didn't have white teeth, not something I've done before. The red-tipped teeth clearly visible here making it Common or Pygmy Shrew, I assume the former?

A hint of something happening with Cydia amplana, 3 Palpita vitrealis and 4 Rush Veneer in the trap. Migrant Lepidoptera. Marsh Harrier high over the garden this morning. From Silverlake: Marsh Damsel Bug and Wasp Spider plus egg sac, the latter something I've not seen before.

Weymouth: a bit more variety in the moth trap with 2 Portland Ribbon Wave, 3 Palpita vitrealis, Cydia amplana, Currant Pug, Pinion-streaked Snout and 2nd gen Flame Carpet and Peach Blossom. Despite lots of sky-watching from the garden, no HB's! 3 flyover Yellow Wagtail a bonus.

Checked out one of Dorset's Iron Age Hillforts for Autumn Lady's Tresses today, a site I've seen them at previously. A superb display with a conservative count of 120+, pretty much all in one area. Also good numbers of the beautiful Autumn Gentian. Wild Orchids UK & Ireland

Weymouth: clear skies overnight meant slim pickings in the moth trap. This Vapourer worthy of a photo, otherwise Cydia amplana and Tawny-barred Angle the only species of note.

Avocet a nice find at Rodden Hive this morning, also 5 Common Sand and a Turnstone. Tinea semifulvella the best from from the trap. 3 Wheatear and 25+ Yellow Wagtail near Langton Herring village both signs that autumn is here.

Weymouth: best here were my 4th Cloaked Carpet (rather worn, but a very late record), 3rd Porter's Rustic and a nice dark Silver Y. Portland Ribbon Wave and Palpita vitrealis best of the rest.

Silverlake: 14 Goosander (11 in photo) and 2 GWE here this morning. I saw this GWE swallow a large Perch, despite all the spines! 6 Snipe on the shoreline were an unusual sight here. The rain produced flythrough Greenshank, 2 Dunlin and a Ringed Plover, none of which stopped.

Weymouth: unusual record of a 2nd generation Blackneck last night. Given current events, just possibly from across the Channel where they are double-brooded.

Of limited interest these days, but there is an Osprey sat on the crest of Chesil Beach eating a fish. Directly across from Rodden Hive. Dorset Bird Club

Of little interest to many people, but a group of 5 Mandarin at Warmwell Cressbeds is of some note in Dorset, they are never easy to find. Dorset Bird Club

A series of guided bird walks around Silverlake this morning luckily coincided with a flyover Osprey. Amazingly, the first I've ever seen here! Dorset Bird Club

After some while searching I managed to find a Bastard-toadflax plant at Portland Bill. I carefully watched it for some time, then bingo, the hoped for Down Shieldbug appeared to soak up the sun. New for me and one I've wanted to see for ages. Tiny and hence tricky to photograph!

Just to prove they still exist, a Small Tortoiseshell from Moonfleet this morning. Only the second I've seen this year. Best of the birds was a Merlin chasing Mipits. Dorset Bird Club Butterfly Conservation 🦋

Weymouth: best from today was my 2nd record of Epinotia tenerana (Nut Bud Moth). Otherwise, Portland Ribbon Wave and a 2nd gen Buff Ermine worth a mention Dorset Moths

I walked up onto Abbotsbury Beach today and had a brief view of a Pipit on the shingle. It called once as it took off, a Sparrow-like 'chillip'. I immediately thought 'Tawny'. It landed again briefly before flying off and lost. All over in a minute but I got these two photos.
