Thinking about online editions of Victorian letters. Some magnificent projects, eg. Darwin, Carlyle, the Brownings, Olive Schreiner, Fox Talbot. But not nearly enough open access resources, even for major 19th-c. figures. victorianresearch.org/other.html#let…

Celebrating an extraordinary manuscript. It's great fun to listen while reading the first page of the letter on display.

Lovely essay about the very nature of periodicalness, taking off from an examination of 'a periodical of one's own' that partook of broadside, pamphlet, and (love this) 'proto-zine.' With an evocative photo of the publisher, editor, writer, printer, distributor.

I love Jane Carlyle's letters and have longed for a one-volume selection. Glad to see Richard Lansdown's edition announced: tinyurl.com/45pfjtk4. But good heavens, the price! $165. Even the PDF is $165! A promised ppb wd be unaffordable at half this amount. What's the point?

OK, folks, new book alert. I'm fun at parties, so I've written a book on death. Do come and hear me talk about 19th-c. deathbeds, funerals and other fun stuff, like Queen Victoria, Rider Haggard and Peter Pan (weirdly, yes, all three together).

If you successfully defended a thesis on Victorian periodicals in 2023, do think about submitting it for consideration for the dissertation prize.
I'm delighted to be chairing the panel this year and am very much looking forward to reading exciting new work in the field.
