If you’ve never seen a UK visa rejection letter -the cruelty, the contempt, the humiliation-here’s the one denying entrance to my mum BECAUSE I’d said in my invitation letter that I was pregnant & needed help. I’m a privileged academic. Imagine what it’s like for other Albanians

Every two years, philosophers, linguists, and logicians gather in Amsterdam for a pagan ritual. They celebrate the winter solstice by giving speeches on abstruse topics, using arcane words and symbols. Very excited to be heading there. events.illc.uva.nl/AC/AC2022/Conf…

Referee about the formal appendix of my paper: "The proof seems right, but it should be double-checked." Indeed---by, for example, you?

Last week I submitted a paper. In one of the sections, I give an overview of triviality results about counterfactuals that I find important. Despite my best efforts, I forgot one. The result I forgot is my own published result. *This* is how good I am at self-promotion.

New paper, forthcoming in JPhil: "Probabilities of Counterfactuals are Counterfactual Probabilities". Abstract: what probability should you assign to "If A, would C"? Answer: the probability that C would have, in the closest worlds where A is true. paolosantorio.net/pccp.pdf

Thanks to some refereeing work, I have some credit to spend on OUP books. Any recommendations for what I should get? Recommendations for books not in philosophy (linguistics, psych, CS) also very welcome.

Excited to be speaking at the Stanford Construction of Meaning workshop today, on "Modalizing the past: a Theory of X-marking". The Bay Area is where I decided I'd become a philosopher. It's great to be back. Thoughts get much clearer when the ocean breeze is blowing on you.

My former student Jessica Mendes (soon, a postdoc at Goettingen) and I will be co-teaching a class at ESSLLI, on predictive and counterfactual modality. Jessica did very interesting work on this topic in her thesis, and I'm very excited to teach with her!

The deadline for PhD applications at UMD is tomorrow! Come work with us. We have standing research groups in cogsci, ethics, language, and logic, and we've done well placing students in excellent postdocs in recent years.
