With raw sugar futures making fresh 4-year lows below 17c/lb, it's worth keeping track of where Brazilian ethanol prices are at. Some cane mills there can switch between making sugar or ethanol. We calculate hydrous ethanol today is approximately 14.90c/lb on a No.11 basis.

Brazilian sugar and ethanol returns are converging rapidly. Sugar now pays just 1.5c/lb. more than ethanol. Many cane mills can flex which product they make. Some may now be considering whether to not maximize sugar output.

India's sugar exports will reach 800 KMT by Sept 30, out of 1 MMT allowed, but the policy expires on that date, leaving 200 KMT unexported.
