Oceano Azul Foundation congratulates the EU for voting in favour of the #HighSeas Treaty!

🌍 Now it is critical that all EU member states ratify it.
The UE can be an important example to the world and a leader in ocean conservation.

This progress provides a big boost to EU🇪🇺 countries to accelerate the #RaceForRatification , and sends an important signal to the rest of the world that the EU is serious about urgent marine life protection in areas beyond countries’ maritime boundaries.

As the new European legislature takes shape, the Manifesto for a #EuropeanOceanPact was presented yesterday at the European Parliament , laying the groundwork for transformative change in ocean policy.

Yesterday marked my end-of-mandate conference 'Towards a European Ocean Pact', an opportunity to address the maritime issues that must be on top of the agenda for the next European Parliament legislature and to launch the Manifesto of Europe Jacques Delors Oceano Azul Foundation
Thank you to all! 🌊

Outcomes from #OurOcean Commitments:
1️⃣ Resulted in global action, with 72% showing evidence of completion.
2️⃣ 47% of all implemented MPAs.
3️⃣ 2.7% out of 5.7% protected ocean through MPAs.
4️⃣ Potential 9.3% of MPAs if all commitments are implemented.

Dr. Jenna Sullivan-Stack, Research Associate, at Oregon State University , provided an assessment of all OOC commitments on MPAs and other ABM themes.

The programme's essence lies in being science-based, community-engaged, and government-led, as only governments can enact laws. Stakeholder involvement, particularly fishers associations, played a key role in designing two-thirds of the network 🌊
