The death of every unhoused person from the cold is a failure of policy, not just a sad coincidence. No human should suffer and die on the streets due to systemic failures in healthcare and housing. We deserve better.

We agree, the weather is scary. What’s even scarier is a province with a massive lack in adequate housing and no plan to rectify it, leaving people to live outside at all. There’s a human rights meltdown occurring due to the housing crisis. That should be the real focal point.

Every week we meet people experiencing homelessness for the very first time, people who have had an apartment they've called home for decades. Because all of the shelters are full, they have no option but to move into a tent. People living in tents experience violence every day.

Yesterday we distributed 4 tents to newly houseless community members. Many folks are reporting not feeling safe in shelter, but beds are usually full anyways. Springtime appears to be coming with a wave of evictions. The housing crisis really feels like it's speeding up.

Last night we supported two folks who were homeless for their first time ever. There were no shelter beds available & they had no supports. This morning, we found one of them laying on the ground, hypothermic while they waited with police for EHS to arrive. They could have died.

We were visiting an encampment about an hour ago. Apparently moments before, a couple of Halifax Regional Police officers walked into the tent without knocking and said "howdy crack smokers."
