Couple fascinating things in here. One is the unquestioned assumption that publishing books must involve a gamble—that we publishers can never know if a book will sell. A 2nd is that that we must rely on bestsellers to subsidize the books that end up not selling. 1/8

Imagine what a shot in the arm it would be for Canadian publishing if the Canada Book Fund offered a small high-risk grant to support startups. The fund currently only supports established presses, which is, IMO, a major factor in the lack of innovation in Cdn publishing. 6/8

What I'm doing at Nine Ten Publications is conservative. I'm not looking to disrupt a damn thing. I'm starting a straight-up traditional small press. I'm just doing it in a way that minimizes risk & relies on it becoming a sustainable business. That shouldn't be rare. 8/8
