🌳🔍 Exciting insights from our latest study in PNASNews! We've delved "underground" into the dynamics of forests and savannas, looking at the role of the water table in shaping these environments. Curious about our findings? Let's dive in! 🧵buff.ly/3qoOO6u 1/5

New record of fire temperatures in Peru shows how fire use shaped biodiverse Andean forests over the last 2100 years. High temperature fires linked to slash-and-burn Maíz cultivation until 800 CE, follwoing by increased humidity and forest regrowth. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Another great PhD offer to combine geochemistry from speleothems & lakes to reconstruct past temperatures and explore in depth past climate changes! A project led by almighty Ana Moreno Caballud & Blas Valero Garces. Find more details here: saco.csic.es/index.php/s/LP… #PaleoIPERocks Instituto Pirenaico de Ecología

Amsterdam’s plan to remove 11,200 parking spaces from its streets by the end of 2025 is even more inspiring when we realize the kind of people-places that are possible where cars used to be. Example — #Amsterdam’s Elandsgracht between 2014 & 2019, via Thomas Schlijper’s great pics.

In a new article in Scientific Reports I find that male PhD students are almost twice as likely than female PhD students to obtain a cum laude distinction for their dissertation. A cum laude is very rare, and only awarded to 5% of Dutch PhD students. 1/5 OA: nature.com/articles/s4159…

Suriname’s Saamaka Maroons still grow rice from seeds an ancestor escaping from a plantation carried in her hair. Now a gene bank seeks to widen use of the rare species to help fight the climate crisis. My story for the The Guardian 🌾🇸🇷👇 theguardian.com/environment/20…
