During a skin exam, the patient told me they had HIV. I acknowledged it and kept inspecting the skin, some areas with my bare hand. Patient teared up and thanked me for not “jumping away” as soon as I learned they were HIV positive. It’s 2022. HIV+ people are not dirty.

To raise kids in America is fear that one day your child, who you love and know with unmatched intimacy, will die in a hail of bullets at church, at a concert, at the movies, at the grocery store, at a party, at a park, on the sidewalk, at school.

My was at an all-time high last week. But then I remembered something:

REAL imposters don't get .

That made me feel better. Maybe it will make someone else feel better today, too. 💛

Unpopular opinion:

Our medical trainees see primary care undervalued but we are somehow shocked yearly when applicants (esp US grads) go unmatched in subspecialties while PC slots open.

More spots are needed but won’t fix the match if not fixed first.

On a personal note

For a poor immigrant kid who left India not speaking a word of English

And found in America a nation willing to embrace me as one of her own

I am deeply honored for this chance to serve this country I love

And grateful to a President for the opportunity

An abolitionist approach to medicine must be taken especially in medical schools and training programs - we should be teaching our trainees to dismantle systemic racism, in medicine and beyond.

In one sense I have a 2-year-old child, and in another sense I have a very small, very loud personal narrator.

I'm A Pregnant Physician and I wrote about why I’m not throwing away my shot. Lack of data isn’t the same as concern for harm, and it’s important to look at the science.

I was never one for social media pregnancy announcements, but if you do it, do it for a good cause, right?

I've decided that you're only a true internist if your reaction to an elderly patient's A1C improving (7.7-7.0-6.3) is worry.

When I say I’m interested in primary care/geri/pall, I get a lot of “oh, you want the chill life” and “bet you’re just burned out”. Can we please change the academic med culture that non-procedural IM is inferior? PCPs are some of the smartest and hardest working docs I know.
