Shallow marine environments are prone to dynamic lighting in the form of 'caustics', mesh-like light patterns moving across the substrate. While caustics can impair the visual systems of marine organisms, here we asked whether they can also affect animal camouflage strategies.

Artificial intelligence may soon mimic behavior, but without subjective experience, it’s only a performance. Consciousness isn’t just function — it’s what it feels like to function.

Bernard J. Baars, PhD (@bernardjbaars) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Human beings are driven by patterns beneath awareness: needs, fears, curiosities. Intelligence is, in part, the art of recognizing these patterns before they dictate all our choices.

Bernard J. Baars, PhD (@bernardjbaars) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Infants display bursts of conscious-like attention long before language, suggesting that consciousness precedes complex cognition rather than resulting from it.
