Ahead of today’s assisted dying Bill debate, I thought I’d do a thread of FALSE FACTS. You know… campaigning soundbites, PR spin. That come up again and again. And are persuasive… but wrong.

MPs debate the assisted dying bill today for 1st time in 6 months. In the interim, a committee of 23 MPs spent 90 hours poring over the legislation & amending it. One of those, ⁦Naz Shah MP⁩, told me the process had made the bill weaker and less safe newstatesman.com/politics/socie…

For the mover of a bill to present such a huge number of amendments to their *own* bill suggests a serious lack of confidence in its safety and rigour. In 20 years I’ve not seen anything so shambolic. Even supporters of the bill must surely see that the bill can’t pass like this.

Such a powerful speech from Daniel Francis MP about the very real risks of this bill for people with learning disabilities, as a father of a daughter with learning disabilities. The lack of regard we’re seeing for vulnerable groups from some in this debate makes me want to cry.

"This process is fundamentally flawed. This is not how we make legislation. This is literally a matter of life and death. "If this bill passes and doesn't have the safeguards, there's no coming back from those decisions." Naz Shah MP #NotThisBill #assistedsuicide

Daniel Francis, committee member: “I’ve heard a lot...about choice, compassion and dignity. But what about the choice, compassion and dignity of the people I’ve described? “It’s my job, it’s all our jobs, to protect the most vulnerable...this bill as it stands fails to do that”

As the Assisted Dying Bill currently stands, we are at risk of heading toward a Horizon-style scandal in the making. My amendments aim to ensure that individuals with eating disorders are not pushed towards assisted death when what they truly need is the care and support they

I couldn’t agree with Naz Shah MP more. How can we possibly pretend the AD bill will be safe while simultaneously accepting there aren’t enough palliative care doctors even to assess each patient considering it (Kim Leadbeater’s committee, incredibly rejected this amendment)?

In today’s debate, the bill's sponsor said: “People with mental health conditions are not eligible for assisted dying under this bill.” But the government’s own impact assessment states the opposite: “Having a disability or mental disorder does not prevent a person from being

Dan Hitchens Nikki da Costa This on anorexia: flat denial to a concerned caller, then Nick Ferrari probes a little further. No acceptance that she rejected Sarah Olney’s amendment in committee. 24hours later, Naz Shah MP was informed in the Commons that her amendment was being suddenly accepted

Important🚨 I strongly welcome David Lammy’s announcement to immediately suspend negotiations of a new trade deal with Israel, summon the Israeli Ambassador, and add further sanctions as Netanyahu’s government targets civilians and blocks food & aid into Gaza.

Following the Foreign Secretary’s decision to suspend negotiations for a free trade agreement with Israel, along with his warnings of further action, we must continue to push to ensure the killing in Gaza comes to an end.

The past 5 months have shown me that many people - who can advocate for themselves, who have autonomy, supportive families, stability-will read this and think, “This sounds nice. I might want that one day.” But ask them to reflect on the fact that the TIA bill will apply to x.com/doctor_oxford/…
