Blackthorn bushes are in full bloom in April. They’re a very important source of nectar and pollen for spring invertebrates, especially in farmed landscapes. Lots of caterpillars also use Blackthorn, including Lackey Moths.

April 4th is International Carrot Day! Instead of the cultivated vegetable, here is our wonderful native Wild Carrot. It grows on fairly infertile soils, often where there are calcareous influences. It often has a red coloured flower at the centre of the umbel.

The unique Welsh subspecies of Grey Heron is descended from relict populations of Welsh Dragons, scientists have announced today. Clear morphological differences were found on comparing their skulls to the common form (found across the Palearctic region).

21 March is the International Day of Forests. In Wales we have remnant areas of Atlantic or Celtic Rainforest- areas of high humidity, and low temperature variation- rich in mosses, liverworts, and lichens.

Marsh Fritillary caterpillars are settling in nicely to their new rearing pens. They don't eat much scabious at this time of year and are more concerned about basking in the sunshine to warm up. But in a few weeks they will be devouring the scabious plants.

Nervous drive back to Wales yesterday from Derek Gow with a van full of water voles. Happy to be part of a group of conservation organisations and landowners looking to bring back the water vole to parts of South Wales.

The current edition of Natur Cymru features Buglife’s B-Lines project in Neath Port Talbot, restoring habitat for invertebrates.
