I saw a patient with complete occlusion of R mainstem with squam Ca. What would have required a carinal pneumonectomy ended up getting a sleeve resection only. Immunotherapy is GAME CHANGER!!

LUL ligula sparing trisegmentectomy for 1 cm, peripheral NSCLC

I should have done a lobectomy first as a 3 months old attending but thanks to David J. Sugarbaker Division of Thoracic Surgery for the excellent training.

On this day in 1895, Welch thoracic surgeon Ivor Lewis was born. He is the eponym of the right-sided approach to esophagectomy, first published in 1945, and detailed in his 1946 Hunterian Lecture. It was originally a two-staged procedure and later transformed into one stage.

On this day in 1966, DeBakey performed the first successful placement of a left ventricular assist device on a patient with a history of severe aortic insufficiency and mitral stenosis. The patient was ultimately discharged from the hospital and resumed normal activities.

Congrats to nasser altorki for leading to completion! I remember CALGB meetings in early/mid 2000s where he was pushing enrollment when things seemed to stall. Persistence paid dividends with this much anticipated landmark study! Looking forward to the publication
