Big thanks to DeRico Symonds and Megan Neaves for presenting today during the NSTU Equity Conference and for guiding close to 100 educators in discussions about Anti-Racist Education, White Privilege, and Systemic Racism. Halifax Regional Centre for Education @HrceLiteracy
Thanks to DeRico Symonds Megan Neaves NSATEE for todayโs conference. So much to unpack, reflect on and take back to my school and share with colleagues. So much work and learning still to do to become a co-conspirator. Very grateful for you to take your time. ๐
If you are trying to get into our conference but canโt please email [email protected]
Please stop saying โBIPOCโ. Either say Black, Indigenous or persons of color OR say the cultural background of the group you are referencing but donโt lump all of them together. Itโs lazy IMO. Take the time to learn the backgrounds of the people you are referencing. ๐คท๐พโโ๏ธ

A powerful day of learning about systemic racism and white privilege NSATEE DeRico Symonds NS Teachers Union
Donโt say racism doesnโt exist in Nova Scotia. Educate yourself. Thank you for this eye opening info DeRico Symonds Megan Neaves
We all have biases. So what can we do to challenge them.. reflect, question, be open to feedback and be accountable. Speak up and speak out. NSATEE DeRico Symonds Megan Neaves
IMPORTANT. White privilege does not mean that you didnโt have a hard life as a white person. It means that skin colour did not play a role in you having a hard life. YES!!! DeRico Symonds Megan Neaves NSATEE
Ally-ship is a lifelong journey. I am an advocate and will educate myself and continue myjourney. If you donโt like it unfollow me. I choose to be part of the solution to racism and discrimination even if it makes me or others uncomfortable DeRico Symonds NSATEE Megan Neaves
Our NS Education and Early Childhood Development system currently has a shortage of bus drivers, EPAs, substitute teachers, custodians, counsellors, speech-language pathologists and psychologists. The education system is not attractive to many because it is difficult work, managed without the proper supports.
And instead of trying to recruit an ever increasing supply of replacement workers (substitutes), our NS Education and Early Childhood Development should work on keeping the folks we have in their classrooms by meaningfully improving their working conditions. Ask them what they need, and give it to them.
Yay!!!! So excited to welcome our guests and presenters to Amherst! Welcome to our first in person conference! NS Teachers Union
