For #FossilFriday here’s part of the type specimen of the Zimbabwean dinosaur Syntarsus, housed in the NHMZ, one of the most abundantly and well preserved early theropods known currently 🦖🇿🇼

It’s been a pleasure & privilege to visit the NHMZ Bulawayo this week: much work and planning for future collaborations. Thanks to Mike Zondo, Moira Fitzpatrick & team for hosting, ESI & Jack_Lovegrove for company and driving, & The Royal Society for funding 🦖🇿🇼🦕

Travelled out to some historic Zim dino localities today, including the type locality for Syntarsus. Still bone in the ground but v hard to excavate. Some impressive living relatives nearby too 🦕🇿🇼🦖🇿🇼🐊

Dear British Airways thanks for damaging my suitcase and giving me yet another reason to seek flights elsewhere. Two issues on this return trip on top of your back-handed Exec Club changes. Yours, a now thoroughly unimpressed Silver Exec Club Member.

Also while on the subject, I was texted departure info on two different recent British Airways flights: one telling me my flight was due to leave an hour earlier and the other 45 mins earlier. Neither were (and both were actually delayed by 2+ hours)

New OA paper just out in Royal Society Publishing in which Xu Xing and I review the current state-of-play with respect to feather origins, highlighting areas of conflict and consensus and suggesting some (hopefully) constructive ways forward 🪶🪶🪶 royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…

Really sad to report that our friend and colleague Richard Fortey passed away this morning after a short battle with cancer. We’ll all miss his wit and wisdom. Here he is checking out a dino footprint we found while filming together on the Isle of Wight

Rather sad that comes just after the passing of that doyen of trilobites, Richard Fortey. I’m guessing the editorial might have been his last piece of scientific writing
