At the Battle of Ledbury Prince Rupert defeated a parliamentarian force commanded by Col. Edward Massie. The royalists chased their opponents out of the town who were forced to retreat back to Gloucester. #OTD in 1645. #BritishCivilWars

#OTD in 1296 a Scottish Army, attempting to releive Dunbar Castle was defeated at the Spott Burn at the 1st Battle of Dunbar. The English army, commanded by John de Warrenne, dispersed the Scottish force taking many prisoner. The castle surrendered soon after. #medieval #Scotland

10 May 1644. James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, captures Morpeth after a siege of 20 days. The Covenanter army, which was besieging York, is forced to send 1000 troops north to protect supply lines.

10 May 1644. The Marquis of Montrose besieged the town of Morpeth, near Newcastle. It was held by Scottish Covenanters & this drew 1000 Scottish cavalrymen away from the siege of royalist held York. A cannon remains at Morpeth from this time. #TheGreatMontrose

#OTD in 1645 the royalist garrison at Godstow House, formerly the site of a medieval nunnery, burnt the house and retreated to Oxford. The arriving parliamentarians under Col. Sheffield managed to quickly put out the fire. #BritishCivilWars

In his greatest victory, James Graham, Marquess of Montrose, destroyed a Covenanater army under Gen. William Baille at the Battle of Kilsyth fought #OTD in 1645. After a hard fight the Covenanters were routed. The road to England now lay open. #BritishCivilWars

13 November 1093. Siege/Battle of Alnwick. Robert de Mowbray surprised a Scottish army laying siege to the town led by King Malcolm III. In the chaos both Malcolm and his eldest son Edward were killed. A largely C18th monument known as “Malcolm’s Cross” commemorates the site.
