The bombastic success of the DeepSeek R1 large language model is a reminder of an overlooked and frightening reality: US tech companies have been handing the AI keys to China for decades. For years, Microsoft and others have been eager for market access to China. In exchange

Pleased to see my latest work on the evolution of Xinjiang's mass re-education published in the Journal of Contemporary China. It draws on new internal state files & and a key new witness to assess the evolution of the mass internments between 2013-2018. Link is below.

The plane has landed in Kashgar, but Thai authorities have yet to issue a statement. It remains unclear whether 40, 43, or 48 men are being deported—43 if including three men whose UNHCR refugee certificates (issued in 2013 but cancelled) and 48 if also counting five in prison.

The Reporters RomaDoN Nyrola Absolutely devastating. @FlightRadar24 shows the flight landed at Kashgar airport at 12:09 p.m. local time. Notable that Kashgar airport runs almost exclusively domestic flights, so clearly an anomaly here.

The Thai government sent dozens of refugees straight into the hands of the CCP’s concentration camps. The world knows exactly what happens to Uyghurs in China: forced labor, torture, sterilization, and extermination. Thailand has a choice to not be on the side of genocide.

The UN is hopelessly corrupt. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency cared more about preserving its Chinese Communist Party funding than about protecting innocent Uyghurs. “Shameful” doesn’t come close to describing the behavior of leadership at UNHCR.

Sorrow and frustration grip Uyghurs and rights advocates as Thailand deports 40 Uyghurs to China, despite U.S. condemnation and rights concerns. Read my latest: voanews.com/amp/sorrow-fru…

At least 40 Uyghurs are sent to China, after a decade long inhumane treatment of the Thai government. Shamelessly. Outrageously. These men asked for help to travel to safe third countries to enjoy freedom that they could not have in China. The world did not save them. 1/5

You turned 63 today. Even though I can’t see you or celebrate with you, I carry you with me every single day. You should be home — surrounded by love, not locked away in silence. You are a brilliant woman, a gentle soul. You are innocent and I refuse to let the world forget you.

I’m honored and feel privileged to teach Uyghur language at GW, one of the few universities in the United States and in the world offering Uyghur Studies. Proud to share Uyghur language and culture with both undergrad and graduate students.
