Cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death worldwide. Unlike humans, zebrafish have the capacity to recover from cardiac damage. LUMC postdoc Giulia Campostrini showed that one responsible factor, found by researchers from the Hubrecht institute, is preserved in humans.
The labs of Jeroen Bakkers and Milena Bellin identified key mechanisms for repairing a hearts. Studying #zebrafish and human #cardiomyocytes they found that calcium handling is crucial during #regeneration
for deciding #heart muscle cells divide or mature. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
📢 Exciting news! Our latest study, just published Science Magazine, uncovers a crucial mechanism that controls the division and maturation of heart muscle cells.

Proud to share our last paper using hiPSC cardiac microtissues to promote post-natal maturation! Milena Bellin Well done @GiuliaCampostrini!
🫀 Dr. Milena Bellin's team at Universiteit Leiden showed that the tri-cellular cardiac microtissue promoted postnatal SCN5A isoform switch in human iPSC- #cardiomyocytes and that adult splicing of SCN5A was driven by MBNL1 in these tissues.
