Great to help in a bird ringing demo Ness Botanic Gardens today with Merseyside Ringing Group & Rose Froud. Lovely to see so many people enjoying themselves & even better to catch many healthy Greenfinches. A species we’ve not ringed at these demos before
Thanks to Joe Lennon for reporting Cormorant 233 at Portmore Lough, N. Ireland, on 24th Jan. This is just the 2nd bird from our project to be found in Ireland.
Last week our Little Egret that went to the Isle of Man was found in N. Wales.
MRG have reached a nice milestone at one of our sites, #woolstoneyes , with a Robin ringed on the 17th January being the 190,000th bird ringed there since 1980. The 100,000 was a Moorhen. I wonder what the 200,000th will be?
In July, decisions were made by Natural England NW which has resulted in an unprecedented outcome in modern times.
0.5ha of the Dee Estuary SAC is now set to be destroyed on Wirral. Wild Justice have been helping to reverse this nationally significant precedent.

Our first cormorant to Northern Island came through this week from Belfast. Thanks to #SandyMcWilliams for the photo and for reporting it.
Ringed an adult Garden Warbler at #woolstoneyes y'day. Had a moult score of 8/50. (Yes, same on both wings). Central tail feathers moulted too. This species is 'winter complete' so shouldn't moult here. Anyone else had garwa moult/arrest moult here?
A small number of knot received leg flags last night at Hoylake (despite the #BlueSuperMoon ) Other birds ringed include Sanderling, Redshank, Dunlin, Oystercatcher and an adult Sandwich tern. Please look out for leg flagged knot and report any sightings.
I am continually astounded by birds. Being a bird ringer, I get to know these birds on an individual level, and this moulting adult Grey Wagtail is now one of these. Caught in Norfolk today but ringed in 2019 as a fledgling in Cheshire! Birds are amazing. Merseyside Ringing Group
