1) How abundant were sharks on coral reefs before humans? Coastal #shark populations are depleted in many regions today, but long-term survey data are limited. Shark scales (dermal denticles) offer a time machine to reconstruct the deeper history of shark communities. #TropiCon20

Nice new paper led by current UCMP PhD student Maya Samuels-Fair, based on a Smithsonian REU. A very cool study system & results that raise a lot of interesting questions about the drivers of long-term trends in degree & prevalence of sexual dimorphism. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Lots of turbulence in Monterey today but got to see a bright white nudibranch, relaxed gobies, rainbow colored abalone shells, strange soft corals, a critter that seemed to be a hybrid of a scorpion and fan coral, and some overly friendly sea lions.

I’m excited to share our new paper, out now in PNASNews. We used #fossil #shark scales (denticles) preserved in coral reef sediments to reconstruct the pre-exploitation baseline of a reef shark community in Caribbean Panama. pnas.org/cgi/doi/10.107… Aaron O'Dea @mccauley_lab (1/18)

Completed the first fieldwork of my Ph.D. with the Grouper Moon Project on Little Cayman! The team works each year to better understand the largest spawning aggregation of Nassau Grouper. Thanks to the great people at REEF, Cayman Islands Department of Environment, the Heppell Lab, Lynn Waterhouse, et al! 🐟

Had a great time presenting last week at #SpeciesOnTheMove! I got to meet loads of fantastic people, learn about some exciting research, and even collect a few megalodon teeth at the tail end. 🦈
