Really, Tim Carney - it’s a fantastic book. As Catholic dad and father of four myself, it resonates with me profoundly, full of wisdom, insight, and hope. Well done.

“Raising kids is a bit like smoking a pork shoulder...you do need to check the thermometer from time to time, but you’ll get the best outcome if you avoid constantly lifting the lid and prodding the meat.”
One of many gems from Tim Carney's great new book.

Belief in natural property rights isn't distinctively libertarian. A lot of socialists also believed that workers have a natural right to their labor and to the fruits of their labor. John Tomasi and I discuss this at length in chapter 3 of The Individualists.

Wordsworth Donisthorpe - the most interesting libertarian you’ve never heard of - was born on this day in 1847. You can read more about him and other fascinating figures from libertarianism’s past in The Individualists, coming out on April 4th!

At the The New York Times, David Leonhardt argues that high real estate commissions in the United States are evidence of the failure of free-market economic theory.
I'd be curious to hear what my free-market economic friends think about this!

This is a great piece by Radley Balko about the specifics of one issue, but also about the larger point that for all the very real flaws of mainstream institutions most 'heterodox' fall pray to the tribalistic dogmatism they decry.

'Rawls asserts that justice is the first virtue of institutions. John Kekes’s new book offers a sustained argument that justice is more like the sixth or seventh. The first virtue...is that they enable limited, flawed people like us to live together...'

Contentedness is, I think, an underrated political virtue.

'Being disposed to be contented, as opposed to discontented, with what the present offers is, I want to suggest, a virtue.'

I've always thought that much of Gerald Gaus's later work makes very important points in an almost completely inaccessible way. But this essay holds up well as explaining the basic idea in a way that's clear and compelling.

Over at FUSION: In the Tradition of Liberty, there's a nice little debate on fusionism. My take: Meyer was wrong to suppose that virtue necessarily presupposes freedom. But that doesn't mean the two things aren't related in important ways.

We launched FUSION: In the Tradition of Liberty to think about whether tradition and freedom are mutually reinforcing. Today we're launching a symposium on the present of 'fusionism', its future, and whether it made any sense to begin with. fusionaier.org

If surge pricing in times of unusually high demand is objectionable, is discounting in times of unusually low demand also bad?

My publisher has just informed me that the Routledge Companion to Libertarianism is now available in paperback. I'm really proud of the essays Ben and I commissioned for this book. Now's a great chance to get it for a much more reasonable price!
